Costco is selling Amylu Chicken Burgers and they are pretty tasty. I bought the Paleo Three Pepper Charbroiled Chicken Burgers and like them a lot more than I expected!
These chicken burgers are great for anyone looking for a flavorful high protein, low carbohydrate meal option.
Cooking Instructions
The chicken burgers from Amylu are already fully cooked and only need to be reheated. Technically I guess you could eat them cold straight from the packaging but we are not savages.
You get ten burgers per package that are divided into five vacuum sealed packages containing two burgers each.
To heat the burgers you need to remove them from the plastic packaging and place on a microwave safe plate. The packaging suggests a heating time of one minute per burger. Since I was heating up two patties I heated them in the microwave for one minute, flipped them over, and heated them for another 45 seconds.
Alternatively, you could remove the patties from the packaging and heat them through in a skillet on your stovetop, your grill, etc.
Taste Test!
The Amylu Paleo Three Pepper Charbroiled Chicken Burgers tasted much better than I expected!
The burgers were juicy and flavorful from the combination of green, yellow and red bell pepper. They also had a pleasant little kick of spiciness that the ingredients revealed came from some red pepper flakes but are not as spicy as Amylu’s Hot Honey Chicken Meatballs.
I had the burgers with a pile of veggies and they made for an extremely filling and low calorie meal. The high protein content of the meal made it very satiating and I look forward to having this meal for dinner again soon.
The only negative aspect from a taste standpoint is that the patty is highly processed which results in a strange, spongy texture. It is impossible to tell that this is a “chicken burger” just by look or mouthfeel.
There are all sorts of ways to dress these burgers up. You could serve them:
- On top of a salad with feta cheese and a balsamic vinaigrette
- On a bun with tomatoes, lettuce, pickles and mayo
- Topped with hot sauce over a bed of cauliflower rice
Calories and Nutrition
One burger is a single serving and has the following nutritional information:
- Calories: 150
- Fat: 9g
- Cholesterol: 85 mg
- Sodium: 540 mg
- Carbohydrates: 1g
- Protein: 17g
Compared to regular beef hamburgers chicken burgers are extremely healthy. These burgers only have 150 calories and 9 grams of fat per patty.
In contrast, the regular beef frozen burgers at Costco have over 300 calories and over 20 grams of fat. So you could eat two of the chicken burgers and still be consuming fewer calories and fat than a beef burger.
There is only 1 gram of carbs in the burgers which makes them Paleo and Keto friendly as long as you don’t put them on a bun.
These patties are not as healthy as Trader Joe’s Shrimp Burgers but are in the same ballpark as Trader Joe’s Mahi Mahi Burgers and are much easier to prepare.
The only real negative about the nutritional content of the chicken burgers is that they are higher in salt than I prefer with 540mg (23% DV) per patty.
You could put these chicken burgers in a rotation with the Don Lee Farms Black Bean Burgers from Costco and have plenty of healthy lunch options.
Ingredients
The burgers have the following ingredients:
- Chicken
- Sweet Bell Peppers (Red, Yellow, Green)
- Spices
- Parsley
- Crushed Red Pepper Flakes
- Paprika
- Rosemary
- Onion
- Garlic
- Salt
- Vinegar
The burgers are listed as Gluten Free.
Price
I bought the 10 pack of chicken burgers for $14.89 which works out to a cost of $5.95 per pound or $1.49 per burger.
These are not the cheapest burger option at Costco but that isn’t a bad thing either. I don’t mind paying around $6 per pound for a high quality, already prepared protein.
Yes, I could buy the frozen hamburgers for less money but I wanted something healthy and easy and these chicken burgers fit the bill just fine for me.
