I stocked up on the Member’s Mark brand of Chicken Fried Rice at Sam’s Club so I would have something quick and tasty for lunch. The fired rice is frozen and you get six servings per box.
Cooking Instructions
There are two sets of cooking instructions for this rice; Microwave and Stove Top.
The package says that cooking on the Stove Top is the preferred method. I prefer to cook the rice in the microwave so I don’t have to get a pan dirty.
Stove Top Instructions
- Heat 1 teaspoon of oil on High in a wok or skillet.
- Pour rice from bag into pan.
- Heat on high, stirring often, for 5 minutes until it reaches an internal temperature of 165F.
- Pour into a bowl and serve
Microwave Instruction
- Tear off corner of plastic pouch to vent.
- Place pouch, seem side up, in the microwave.
- Heat on High for three minutes.
- Carefully remove from microwave, transfer to a bowl and serve.
Taste
The chicken fried rice tastes fine but is underwhelming.
You get a clue that the rice is lacking when the box says you should serve the rice with other dishes like Orange Chicken or Crab Rangoon. The packaging also suggests making it more flavorful by adding some sriracha sauce.
The ingredient list says the rice has chicken breast meat, eggs, bacon, onions and edamame. The label is technically correct but the other ingredients are few and far between. Mainly what you are getting is some rice seasoned with a tasty, but salty, sauce.
I enjoy the fried rice but always add some Sliced Roast Beef or Canned Chicken to boost up the protein level and make the meal more filling. I also add in about a tablespoon of sriracha to give the rice a little kick of heat.
The bottom line is that the rice is fine when doctored up or served with another entrée but it is a bit plain and lacking when served on its own.
Calories and Nutrition
One bag of the fried rice is a single serving and has the following nutritional information:
- Calories: 420
- Fat: 9g (12% DV)
- Cholesterol: 55mg (18% DV)
- Sodium: 1180mg (51% DV)
- Carbohydrates: 68g (25% DV)
- Protein: 16g
My only complaint from a nutritional standpoint is that there is a LOT of sodium in the rice.
Cost of Chicken Fried Rice at Sam’s Club
You get six bags of chicken fried rice per box which costs $11.98 which means that you are paying $2 per serving.
$2 per serving for fried rice isn’t exactly a bargain but what you are really paying for is the convenience of being able to get a bowl a fried rice cooked up in about three minutes.
You can make a better chicken fried rice for less money when you cook it from scratch but this will do just fine when you are short on time.
