Really Not a Fan of the Jimmy Dean Croissant Breakfast Sandwiches at Costco

I went to Costco when I was hungry and ended up buying the 12 pack of Jimmy Dean Breakfast Sandwiches from the freezer section.  The sandwiches are made with pork sausage, cage free eggs and cheese on a croissant and they sounded pretty good when I bought them.

Overall I am going to call these breakfast sandwiches acceptable, but far from great.

Taste

On the plus side these sandwiches are savory and filling which are the main things I want from a breakfast sandwich.

On the negative side, everything about the sandwiches screams “processed”.  I can identify the different layers of food product for what they are:

  1. Croissant
  2. Cheese
  3. Egg
  4. Sausage
  5. Croissant

….but I always identify them as “food product” instead of ingredients.

As far as the croissant is concerned, it is pretty much a joke.

The “croissant” is a bread product, made with palm oil and high fructose corn syrup, that is formed into a croissant like shape.  If you have expectations for a buttery type pastry with layers of delicate, flaky goodness then let me dash your hopes in advance.

Heating Instructions

There are two sets of heating instructions for the sandwiches:

  • From Frozen
  • From Refrigerated and Thawed

Heating Instructions From Frozen

To heat the sandwiches from from you need to:

  • Remove the sandwich from the plastic wrapper
  • Wrap the sandwich in a paper towel
  • Defrost the sandwich for 90 seconds by heating in your microwave at 30% Power.
  • Heat the sandwich on in your microwave on High for 50 seconds
  • Lets stand for one minute before eating.

These instructions are not useful for me because I have no idea how to set my microwave to 30% Power for the defrosting step.  Instead, I remove the sandwich from the plastic wrapper and wrap it in a paper towel.  The sandwich get microwaved on High for 45 seconds, flipped over, and microwaved on High for one minute.

Heating Instructions from Refrigerated (Thawed)

To heat the sandwich after it has thawed in your refrigerator you should:

  • Remove the plastic wrap
  • Wrap the sandwich in a paper towel
  • Heat the sandwich in the microwave for 50 seconds
  • Let the sandwich stand for one minute before eating.

I do not find these instructions to be very useful as I keep the sandwiches frozen in my freezer.  If you do decide to thaw them in your refrigerator then you should realize that they will only last for three days.

Calories and Nutrition

The Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches are okay but not great from a healthiness perspective.  They are better for you than a bacon wrapped doughnut but I will leave it at that.

One sandwich is a single serving and has the following nutritional information:

  • Calories: 400
  • Fat: 26g (33% DV)
  • Cholesterol: 115mg (38% DV)
  • Sodium: 580mg (25% DV)
  • Carbohydrates: 28g (10% DV)
  • Protein: 13g

In all fairness to Jimmy Dean, you could eat three of these sandwiches per day, one for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and still be below the Recommended Daily Values for everything except cholesterol.

If you want a healthy breakfast then see if your Costco carries Jimmy Dean Delights which are much better than these sandwiches.

Price

I bought the 12 pack of breakfast sandwiches at Costco for $13.99 which works out to a cost of $1.16 per sandwich.

You can buy a similar 12 pack these sandwiches from Walmart for $15.98 which works out to a cost of $1.33 per sandwich.  I use the word “similar” because the sandwiches sold at Costco are made with Cage Free Eggs while the ones from Walmart are not.

This means that you will save $0.17 per sandwich (12%) when you buy the Cage Free version at Costco.
