The Costco muffins taunt me every time I go shopping. The muffins come in a variety of delicious flavors, are a nice value and are absolutely loaded in calories.
I am trying so hard to stick to my diet but these muffins keep tempting me! Especially the Blueberry Muffins….those things are amazing!
Flavors {Varies by Season and Region}
It looks like the specific flavor of muffins varies across different stores/regions.
My store in Baton Rouge currently carries:
- Almond Poppy
- Blueberry
- Double Chocolate
When I checked out some Facebook groups I saw pictures for other flavors including:
- Chocolate Chip
- Apple Crumb
- Raspberry Lemon
Freeze the Muffins for Later
Costco sells the muffins as two six packs which means you end up with twelve extremely large muffins. Unless you are buying these for a brunch event or other party situation you will want to freeze some of these so they wont go bad before you get around to eating them.
Freezing the muffins is incredibly easy and I saw that a lot of folks simply place the package straight in the freezer with no extra preparation. Other folks will put them into Ziplock bags while a few folks will wrap them in Saran wrap followed by aluminum foil.
The best tips I saw for freezing the muffins were
- Cut them in half before freezing.
- Take them out of the freezer before you take a shower and they will be ready to eat for breakfast when you get out.
Cost
You get to mix and match your muffin flavors as you purchase two packages of six muffins.
The 12 pack of muffins currently costs $8.99 which works out to a cost of $0.75 per muffin.
This is a great value as the muffins are HUGE and would easily cost $5 down at a coffee shop. Come to think of it, you could start a pretty sweet business selling Costco muffins and coffee if you had the right location!
You can find the muffins in the Bakery section of the warehouse where they are usually found beside the amazing croissants and cookies.
Calories
Here is where things get ugly. Costco’s muffins are HUGE and are basically a delivery device for flour, sugar and eggs.
The exact calorie count varies based on flavor but ranges from:
- Blueberry Muffin = 580 Calories
- Chocolate Chip Muffin =640 Calories
- Apple Crumb Muffin = 640 Calories
- Double Chocolate Muffin = 680 Calories
When this calorie information was posted in a Facebook group one of the best replies I saw was, “Nobody is getting off this rock alive. Go ahead and spread some Kerrygold butter on these things and start living!”
I think the best approach is to slice the muffins in half, place in Ziplock bags and freeze them for later. This will give you a more reasonable portion size and stops you from eating the whole tray of muffins on one sitting!
