I spotted the My Mochi ice cream at Costco and knew that I had to bring it home for my daughter to try. This type of stuff is right up her alley and I thought I stood a chance at being a hero for bringing home something cool.
It turns out that she was already pretty familiar with the product and enjoys it quite a bit. She also gave me a little education about the ice cream in between bites!
Let’s take a closer look at what you get with the box so you can decide if this ice cream is right for you!
Mochi is a High Calorie Treat
My Mochi is a high calorie desert that consists of a ball of ice cream wrapped in dough. A single piece contains 100 calories and a full serving, four pieces, contains 400 calories. A full serving also comes with 94% of you Daily Value of sugar.
You get a nice dose of calcium and potassium with the ice cream but the overall calories and sugar content make the mochi an unhealthy indulgence.
The dough for these mochi is gluten free.
Three Flavors of Ice Cream
The mochi at Costco comes in three trays with each tray holding six pieces of three different flavors. The flavors currently being offered are:
- Watermelon
- Sweet Mango
- Green Tea
The watermelon mochi is my daughter’s favorite with the sweet mango being a close second. The sweet mango mochi has a very bold mango flavor compared to the mildness of the watermelon.
One of the things my daughter really likes about the My Mochi brand is the rice dough. Apparently the dough on these mochi is “just right” and isn’t chewy, rubbery or “too doughy” as she has encountered with other brands.
How to Eat Mochi
My daughter also schooled my on how to eat mochi. Apparently a key part of the process is to let the mochi sit at room temperature for a couple of minutes before you take a bite.
By letting the mochi sit at room temperature for a while the ice cream softens and melts just a little. This softened ice cream is easier to eat and creates a fun textural contrast with the dough.
Essentially the mochi are like soup dumplings but for desert!
Costco Value
I bought the 18 pack of mochi at Costco on sale for $7.99 but they are regularly priced at $10.99. The regular price works out to a cost of $0.61 per piece.
You can buy a six piece package of My Mochi at Target for $4.99 which works out to a cost of $0.83 per piece.
This means that you will save $0.22 per piece (26%) when you buy the My Mochi ice cream at Costco.
Tried these recently for the first time (on sale). LOVE THEM!!! I agree, the right amount of mochi. These are sweet but not too sweet, and have great texture. Will get these again for sure. Thank you for the review.
