My job for Thanksgiving this year was to bring an apple pie. I volunteered for this dish because I knew there was a great apple pie at Costco that was large enough to feed a crowd of people.
If you are on the fence about Costco’s apple pie then don’t worry because they are delicious!
Heating Instructions
Costco apple pies are fully cooked and ready to eat. Whether you eat the pie cold or warm is simply a matter of preference.
Using the oven is the ideal method is ideal for reheating the entire pie as it helps maintain a crisp crust and evenly warmed filling. Here are the steps!
- Preheat: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Prepare the Pie: Remove the pie from the plastic holder and place the pie on a baking sheet. To prevent excessive browning, you can loosely cover the pie with aluminum foil.
- Reheat: Heat for about 30-45 minutes.
- Check Temperature: Ensure the pie’s internal temperature reaches at least 165°F (74°C) before serving.
The crust turned a beautiful golden brown and the filling was heated through and even bubbling slightly!
Taste Test
These pies are delicious!
The crust is tender and flaky. The apples are firm and not mushy.
The balance of cinnamon and sugar is spot on with the pie being sweet and savory without being cloyingly sweet.
The only “fault” with the pie results from its size. The pie is absolutely massive and the slices kind of break under their own weight when serving. I tried hard to get a perfect slice of pie for a picture and just could not make it happen.
If the cosmetics of your pie are important to you then you might want to have a can of whipped cream on hand to cover up the cracks in the crust.
Changes in the Apple Pie
Costco has multiple versions of their apple pie with the biggest differences being in the preparation of the crusts.
This pie had a standard “crumb style” crust. Other versions have a “Double Crust” while others have a lattice crust.
I have read a few articles where people claim that the thickness of the apple slices has changed over time.
Regardless of which version of the pie your local Costco carries, they are all delicious.
Costco Value
This is a massive pie that weighs in at 75 ounces and cost me $9.99. This works out to a cost of $0.133 per ounce.
You can buy a 42 ounce Ready to Bake Marie Callender’s apple pie at Walmart for $5.97. This works out to a cost of $0.142 per ounce.
This means that you can save $0.009 per ounce (6%) by purchasing the larger pie at Costco. The cash savings are not really significant on these pies but since they are ready to eat the real savings comes in the form of time.
Price went up to $14.99 as of September 2022
Did you know that Costco moved the price of their pie — just before the holiday season and “pie eating time” — by $5 in one fell swoop? That pie is now $14.99.
I think it’s disgusting because inflation hasn’t hit 50% yet. Costco is GOUGING, and right before a big holiday. I lost my faith in that retailer.
I realized the increase….after I bought our annual pies! What a shame. I didn’t even look at the price. They are usually consistent 🙁 I’m so disappointed.
Cost have gone up for Costco as well as for the rest of us. How long has it been that the pie has been the previous price? I still think I’m getting a bargain at 14.99. I saw a pie half the size or less at my neighborhood HyVee for about $25.00.
