I bought the two pack of Canyon Bakehouse Gluten Free Bread at Costco. I was curious how this gluten free bread would compare to regular bread and the other celiac friendly products at Costco.
Long story short….it was a bad experience and I cannot recommend the product.
Packaging Issues
You get two loaves of bread per bag and each loaf is sealed in a separate, thicker bag.
The Canyon Bakehouse packaging says:
“Our Stay-Fresh packaging keeps your bread fresh long after it’s been made in our bakery. Once the inner bag is opened, enjoy within 5 days.”
It looks like they are expecting he packaging to be wonderful at preserving the freshness of the bread because I searched hard and could not find an Expiration Date, Use By Date or Best By Date anywhere on the packaging.
Unfortunately the “Stay-Fresh” Packaging has two problems.
The first problem is that the packaging doesn’t keep the bread fresh as the first loaf I pulled out was completely molded over. Yeah…I wasn’t too happy when I saw this guy.
The second problem is that the Stay Fresh packaging is not resealable. The other loaf of bread was perfectly fine but I had to use a pair of scissors to open the packaging and then I couldn’t close it. If I wanted to keep the second loaf fresh I would have had to store it in a one gallon Ziploc bag.
Taste Test!
I used some of the bread from the non-molded loaf and made a roast beef sandwich with Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise.
The flavor of the bread was slightly nutty with notes that tasted right for a multigrain product.
The problem was that the this was the driest bread I have ever eaten. It was an odd sensation to bite into the sandwich and have pockets of juicy moisture from the lettuce, tomato and mayo followed by patches of intense dryness as I slowly slogged through the bread.
I ended up needing the side of kosher dill pickle slices to chew on and balance out the dryness of the bread.
I tried a plain slice of the bread later on just to confirm my initial experiences and it was just as dry and parching as the first time.
While I realize that making a tasty gluten free bread can be challenging this bread falls way short of the very good gluten free ciabatta rolls from Shar.

Costco Value
I bought the two pack of multigrain gluten free bread at Costco for $8.99 which works out to a cost of $4.50 per loaf.
Specialty gluten free breads are a premium product and the Canyon Bakehouse loaves are comparably priced to similar celiac friendly breads. That being said, I don’t think you get what you pay for with this brand and would take a pass.
I never saw this at Costco and purchased this bread on 12/13/2022 and was so excited I went home and made two sandwiches. Within an hour I was throwing up. I thought it was food poisoning since gluten-free is a choice for me, so the presence of gluten would not upset my stomach. Everything else I ate with the bread I have had before with no problems. Has anyone else experienced this?
I love their white bread version. Best bread I’ve had gluten free. I am unable to eat the seeds in mutligrain breads so I can’t comment on this particular variety.
Just got the brad from Costco for the first time. Bread felt wet in the middle, I, very naive thought it was Normal and ate it. Didn’t see any mold but as I was researching online it should not be wet. Now hoping and praying we don’t get sick. So disappointed ☹️
Anyone else has had the same experience with this bread?
