Ingredient List

The Green Dragon Sauce has the following ingredients:

  • Water
  • Jalapeno peppers
  • Tomatillo puree
  • Vinegar
  • Cane sugar
  • Cilantro puree
  • Salt
  • Garlic puree
  • Spinach powder
  • Xanthan gum
  • Lime juice
  • Habanero peppers

There is nothing on the label that indicates the spiciness of the sauce.  This was a surprise to me as Trader Joe’s took the time to label their Chipotle Black Bean Dip and Salsa Verde as “Mild”.

How Does Trader Joe’s Green Dragon Hot Sauce Taste?

This is an absolutely delightful green hot sauce!  The jalapeno and habanero peppers pack some serious heat that lit me mouth up.  Ona spiciness level I would rate this as a 6.5 out of 10.  This is just spicy enough to add some zip and zing but not so much as to burn your taste buds off.

The tomatillos, sugar, vinegar and cilantro add layers of flavor so this sauce is much more than “heat”.

I started out putting this sauce on some chicken tacos and thought it was perfect.

The sauce has also been excellent of scrambled eggs, Mahi Mahi burgers, and assorted lettuce wraps.  The beautiful part of using this sauce on scrambled eggs is that the hot coffee that goes with breakfast gives the sauce an afterburner effect that takes the spice level up a notch or two.

Green Dragon is an excellent hot sauce and is worth a special trip to Trader Joe’s as soon as I start to run low.  This is going to be a standard issue condiment in my house along with the Cholula hot sauce I get at Costco.

Amazon Reviews of Trader Joes Green Dragon Hot Sauce

Some of the Positive comments left by Amazon customers include:

  • This is a perfectly balanced green sauce. Not acidified or laden with vinegar, just a great sauce with a bit of tomatillo feel to it. Great in Mexican themed dishes, like quick quesadillas, enchiladas, etc.
  • This sauce has a very good flavor and enough heat to make my mouth sing but not burn.
  • One of the best green sauces ever. Great on taco night.

Most comments associated with the 1 Star reviews were about problems with Amazon’s shipping or seller pricing and did not reflect on the quality of the sauce. The only negative comment I found about the sauce itself was:

  • The worst part is that after putting this sauce on my normally delicious tacos, they got overpowered by this horrible taste of spinach powder. This terrible taste linger in my mouth for at least 45 minutes.

For what it is worth, I did not pick up on the spinach flavor at all.
