We were having some friends over for a special event the other day and I wanted to prepare a nice meal for them to enjoy. I bought the Marie Morin Caramel Flan from Costco to serve as a desert because I thought it looked pretty and had the potential to be tasty!
You get eight individual flans per package that are served in their own glass jars. The flan consists of a creamy custard with a caramel sauce.
Let’s take a closer look at what you get with this box of desserts.
Nutrition and Ingredients
Let’s take a closer look at what is in the flan.
Nutrition Facts
You get about 8 flans per box with 1 flan being a single serving.
The nutrition facts for a single serving are:
- Calories: 240
- Fat: 10g (13% DV)
- Cholesterol: 145mg (48% DV)
- Sodium: 90mg (4% DV)
- Carbohydrates: 33g (12% DV)

Between the calories, cholesterol and sugar there really isn’t anything healthy about this dessert but I guess that is the point sometimes.
Ingredient List
The flan has the following ingredients:
- Cream
- Milk
- Cream
- Mono and di glycerides
- Disodium phosphate
- Sodium citrate
- Carrageenan
- Eggs
- Caramel
- Sugar
- Water
- Sugar
- Frozen yolk mix
- Egg yolk
- Sugar
- Natural flavors
That is the most complicated “Cream” that I have ever seen. I wonder what type of cow they were milking?
The packaging states that you should not freeze the flan or store them upside down.
Serving the Flan
There are no serving instructions on the packaging or on the company website. I assume that these are meant to be served cold but I did see a comment on YouTube that said they were better if heated in a warm water bath.
You need to remove the black foil on the cup and use a spoon to mix the custard with the syrup which is located in the bottom of the cup.
Taste Test
I am in a pickle on this review, guys. I bought this product so my guests would have a dessert but I simply do not like desserts of any kind. My daughter said she liked the flan but has not asked me to get more.
Instead of sharing my thoughts on how the flan tastes I thought I would share this video instead that does a walkthrough and tasting of the product. Below the video I will share a few of the comments that viewers shared on the YouTube platform.
The “comments section” for the video is loaded with reviews from viewers stating how much they disliked the flan.
The general theme of the comments is that the custard is flavorless while the sauce is thin and tastes burnt. Apparently the only good thing about the flan is the cute little jars that can be reused.
In a couple places in the comments the video creator, GlenRok FoodTube, states that he would not buy this product again.
Costco Value
I bought the 8 pack of flans for $7.79 at Costco which works out to a cost of $0.974 per dessert.
I do not have a strong benchmark for comparison but almost a dollar per serving seems a bit high for a product that is milk, eggs and sugar. It certainly is high if it is as bad as the comments on YouTube indicate.
That being said, a buck for a dessert option that I didn’t have to make was worth it to me.
Just bought this last night at Costco in LA. My son loves Flan. He was excited when I gave him one. Then I noticed he took a couple of bites and said “I don’t like it dad”. He said it tasted funny. So, I tried it and the texture did not have the Flan texture and the caramel tasted like burnt coffee (just my take). My wife, who is a chef, tasted it and said “the caramel is burnt”. Not sure if this is how the product is intended to be or we got a bad batch. Either way, if my son pushed it away that means it’s not good.
I bought the Marie Morin flan to try. I am not impressed. The caramel on the bottom was the consistency of water and had a burned taste. I don’t know if it the preservatives that have to be used for shelf life or the that it is not made the same day it is eaten. I probably will not purchase any more.
I bought the Flan and its great!
The caramel burn taste is supposedly to be like that many latin people like it and know what it is like.
I feel that most reviewers don’t know how flan is supposed to taste. Being one of my favorite desserts, I thought this brand was exceptional . The custard part was the richest I’ve ever had . The sauce was just how it should be , a slightly burnt buttery taste . I found it at a clients home and intend to buy it . .
Delighted that you had a better experience!
