We Really Enjoyed the Kirkland Kettle Chips with Himalayan Salt from Costco

I bought a bag of the Kirkland Signature Kettle Brand Krinkle Cut Potato Chips with Himalayan Salt at Costco since our family loves potato chips in just about every shape, form and fashion.

Of course, everyone in the house has their own idea about what makes the perfect chip so we usually end up with 2-3 different bags stuffed into the snack drawer!

Taste Test

What had me excited about these chips was that they look like plain Ruffles, which is my wife’s favorite chip, with the crunchy texture of a kettle cooked chip, which is my favorite style of chip.

The chips taste extremely plain, like fried potatoes with just a touch of salt.  I really mean it when I say, “a touch of salt” as the seasoning on the chips is minimal. I guess that pink Himalayan salt is expensive and Costco is trying to save a few pennies per bag 🙂

The chips are slightly greasy but not oily.

The most notable characteristic of the chips is that they are extremely crunchy.  Personally I think the crunch factor is perfect while my wife thinks the chips are almost too hard to eat.

Kirkland Kettle Chips have Crunchy Ridges

Because the chips…

  • Have Ridges
  • Are Firm and Crunchy
  • Have a Neutral Flavor Profile

…they are absolutely amazing for scooping up dips like guacamole and, our other favorite, creamy French onion.

Unlike Ruffles, when I scoop up a bunch of dip with these chips they almost never break!

In the end we are still a house divided as my wife likes the flavor and “dippability” of these chips but prefers the softer texture of Ruffles.

Calories and Nutrition

A single serving of chips, 1 ounce, consists of about 9 chips and has the following nutritional information:

  • Calories: 150
  • Fat: 9g (12% DV)
  • Cholesterol: 0mg
  • Sodium: 110mg (5% DV)
  • Carbohydrates: 15g (5% DV)
  • Protein: 2g

The chips are labeled as Gluten Free but are not labeled as Organic.

I can’t really call this snack food healthy as 150 calories is a lot for nine chips.  On the plus side the chips have slightly fewer calories and a little less salt than Ruffles so at least they have that going for them!

Costco Value

Costco is selling a massive 32 ounce bag of Kettle Chips for $4.99 which works out to a cost of $0.156 per ounce.

These chips are clearly marked as being produced by Kettle Brand which allows a direct comparison to the price of the Kettle Brand Sea Salt Chips sold at Walmart where you can buy an 8.5 ounce bag for $2.98 or $0.351 per ounce.

You can also compare these chips to the Party Size (13 ounce) bag of Ruffles which costs $4.98 or $0.383 per ounce.

Regardless of which comparison you make it turns out that you will be saving at least 50% when you buy the Kettle Chips at Costco!
