Costco is selling Kirkland Chunks Cat Food in Gravy and my insane kitty demanded I pick up a case. At least that is what I think he meant when he brought yet another frog into the kitchen.
Anyhow, he has me trained so I went to Costco.
Two Flavor Variety Pack
There are 40 cans of cat food, three ounces each, in the case. The 40 cans are evenly split with 20 being chicken in gravy and the other 20 being salmon in gravy. I wasn’t a fan of how the cans are packed since all 20 cans of salmon were at the bottom of the box and all 20 cans of chicken were at the top.
The packaging promotes the benefits of:
- Grain Free
- No Preservatives
- Omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids
- Supports Healthy Digestion and Immune System
The cans have easy open pull tops that actually work. You can easily open one of the cans and pour the food into your cat’s bowl without getting juices all over your hands.
The cans are labelled as being recyclable.
Ingredients
The cat food contain real chunks of either salmon or chicken in a thin gravy or broth. The food also contains animal liver, egg whites, peas, pumpkins, vitamins and a few other odds and ends.
The recommended feeding guide says a 6-8 pound cat should be fed 2-3 cans of the food per day.
The 3 ounce cans provide a smaller serving than the 3.5 ounces you get with the Kirkland pate cat food at Costco.
The nutritional information is essentially identical for the two flavors:
- Calories: 74
- Crude Protein: 8% Minimum
- Crude Fat: 3% Minimum
- Crude Fiber: 1.5% Minimum
- Taurine: 0.1% Minimum
The food comes with the statement from AAFCO that:
Kirkland Signature Chunks in Gravy Chicken Recipe and Salmon Recipe are formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO cat food nutrient profiles for maintenance.
Taste Test!
My cat has tried both the chicken and salmon versions of the Kirkland Chunks in Gravy and he gave them both a positive review. Judging by how he reacts when I put the bowl down it seems like he is a little more excited by the salmon flavor.
My cat’s appreciation was so high that he showed me his butt and brought us a lizard.
Price at Costco
The cat food is Item Number 1567727 and is found in the back of the warehouse with the other pet foods and pet supplies.
The case of 40 cans of food cost $23.99 which comes out to about $0.60 per can or $0.20 per ounce.
On a per ounce basis the Kirkland Chunks cost just about the same as the Kirkland Pate so from a value perspective the only real question is which type of food does your cat prefer.
I just bought 2 cases of this last week, and I will be returning them to Costco tomorrow. Let me qualify this by saying that I have had many cats over the past 45 years, I volunteer at a rescue and have tried pretty much every cat food out there. I know how cat food smells. Maybe I got a bad batch of the Kirkland, but the odor of both the salmon and the chicken flavors was disgusting. The salmon did not smell like fish, and had a faint unnatural, rather chemical-like odor. The chicken was so disgusting that I took it immediately out to the outdoor trash can… Strangely it smelled both rotten and had that same chemical-odor as the salmon. I couldn’t give it to my cat, and I couldn’t stand the odor in the kitchen trash or composting bins. Something is seriously wrong with quality control at the plant that makes this for Costco. I hope it is just a bad batch but it might also be cost-reduction to the formula that is happening over time. But I am actually afraid to open other cans or to try this again. It’s a shame Costco no longer seems to carry the I Luv My Cat canned food; the quality of that was very good.
I absolutely agree. The smell from both flavors is not natural. They both smell disgusting and my cats poop smells so much worse and he’s shedding like he’s never shredded before
I completely agree.
The smell of the cat food is disgusting so much so that I also took it immediately out to the outdoor trash bin.
This is the worst cat food ever snd my cat cones with a foot of the bowl and reyrea6s even when he is really really hungry. What’s going on here? I am also returning the case with a few cans missing as I tried different flavors with same result.
I agree that the smell is unusual, but it didn’t strike me as a spoiled or rotten smell. If it was rotten, I doubt my kitty would take to it. Downside for me, is that my cat doesn’t like shreds or chunks, so I’m obliged to process for a few seconds in a bullet blender.
I think I’ll return to the Kirkland pate, his favorite food format.
I have had no complaints about this food and have not noted the issues previously mentioned.
My cats love this food and get very excited when I pop the lids.
I’ve used this before, and I just purchased another case. My cat dislikes shreds and chunks, so I also process for a few seconds in a bullet blender. Then, he’s fine with it. He has also been eating the Kirkland dry chicken and rice kibble for years. Considering what I recently paid for a four pound bag of Blue Buffalo, it’s a great deal. Chicken is the first ingredient. My Mackerel tabby loves it, and I generally trust Costco to deliver a quality product at a very fair price.
