I bought the 24 can pack of Kirkland Signature Chicken and Rice canned dog food at Costco and brought it home for my dogs to try. Let’s take a look at what you get with this dog food so you can decide if it is right for your pups!
My quick review is, “The Kirkland Chicken and Rice Canned Dog Food is okay but not great. I will buy a different product the next time I buy dog food at Costco.”
Update: We have switched over to Kirkland’s Nature’s Domain Turkey and Pea Stew and find it to be a much higher quality product.
Ingredients
The Chicken and Rice dog food lives up to it’s labelling with the first five ingredients being:
- Chicken
- Chicken Broth
- Animal Liver
- Rice
- Chicken Meal
The food has a Minimum Crude Protein value of 9% and 426 calories per can.
Texture and Smell
After I used the easy open pull tab to get the top off I saw the food itself and had mixed emotions.
The texture was firm and could either be called “pate” or “mush”. I was unable to shake the food out of the can and ended up using a spoon to scoop it out.
I know that my dogs absolutely don’t care but I don’t feel great about feeding them a big bowl of brown mush.
On the plus side, the food did not have an overwhelming odor like many other brands of canned dog food that we have tried.
Feeding
You can either feed this canned food directly to your pups or mix it in with a dry kibble. The food is labeled as being formulated for all stages of growth so it should be good for young pups and old hounds.
We added the one can of canned food to one cup of dry Kirkland Turkey and Sweet Potato dry dog food and my dogs readily accepted it. They weren’t excited by the food but they did work their way through it.
The feeding amounts for different sized dogs suggested on the label are:
- 3-10 lbs = 1/4 to 3/4 can
- 10-20 lbs = 3/4 to 1 1/4 cans
- 20-30 lbs = 1 1/4 to 1 3/4 cans
- 30-40 lbs = 1 3/4 to 2 1/4 cans
- 40-60 lbs = 2 1/4 to 3 cans
- 60-80 lbs = 3 to 3 3/4 cans
- 80-100 lbs = 3 3/4 to 4 1/4 cans
As always, make sure your dog has an ample supply of clean water available as well.
Digestability
We have three dogs and I take a few minutes every evening to do a “pooper scooper” patrol in our backyard.
The dogs seem to have no problem handling this food as there have been no loose stools or other signs of gastric distress.
Storage
The case of cans is marked with a Best By date that is about three years from your date of purchase.
I keep the cans in my pantry and suspect that we will finish the few that are left before they expire in three years 🙂
Price
The Kirkland Chicken and Rice Canned Dog Food is Item Number 1567724 and is found in the back of the warehouse with the other cat and dog supplies.
The 24 count of canned dog food costs $27.99. This works out to a cost of $0.088 per ounce or $1.16 per can.
Overall Summary
On the positive side the canned food has the following going for it:
- I like the easy open cans.
- My dogs eat the food.
- No evidence of digestion issues.
On the negative side:
- I don’t like the appearance of the food.
- Have to use a spoon to scoop it out
- My dogs aren’t excited for the food.
I am not going to say that there is anything wrong about the food. I will also say that there wasn’t anything that I am excited about either. There are a couple other canned dog food options at Costco and I will be giving them a try to see if there is one that my pups will love.
