Wicked Good! Trader Joe’s Ciabatta Bread (Rolls, Demi Baguette and Baguette)

My latest haul from Trader Joe’s included the ciabatta baguette.  I absolutely love ciabatta bread and could not wait to taste Trader Joe’s take on this classic.

I am a sucker for the  combination of ciabatta’s chewy crust and the full, almost tangy flavor of the bread.  The open, airy texture of the crumb makes it perfect for making crunch toasts and soaking up other flavors.

Let’s take a closer look at this bread so you can figure out which type to put in your shopping cart.

Nutrition, Ingredients and Labelling

Let’s take a closer look at what you get with this bag of bread!

Nutrition Facts

The nutrition facts below are taken from the ciabatta baguette which has two loaves of ciabatta bread and lists a single serving as two ounces.  The nutrition facts for a two ounce serving are:

  • Calories: 140
  • Fat: 1g (1% DV)
  • Cholesterol: 0mg (0% DV)
  • Sodium: 300mg (13% DV)
  • Carbohydrates: 27g (10% DV)
  • Protein: 5g

I believe that a single serving of Trader Joe’s ciabatta rolls is 3 ounces which would increase the values above by 50%.  For example, the calories for a single ciabatta roll would be about 210.

Ingredient List

The ciabatta bread has the following ingredients:

  • Unbleached enriched flour
  • Water
  • Sea salt
  • Yeast
  • Malted barley flour

I do not see any indication that any preservatives are used to prolong the shelf life of this bread.  These are the same ingredients used in Costco’s ciabatta rolls.

Labelling

The labelling indicates that this product potentially contain traces of:

  • Soy
  • Walnut
  • Hazelnut

This product is not labelled as Organic.

The bread is a product of Canada.

Rolls, Demi Baguette and Baguettes

Trader Joe’s currently offers their ciabatta bread in three packaging sizes.

  • Baguettes
  • Demi Baguette
  • Rolls

Baguettes

The baguette contains two loaves that weigh about 6 ounces each for a total package weight of 12 ounces.

The baguettes are perfect for slicing into rounds or diagonals for making toasts or slicing lengthwise for making hoagies and Po’boys.

Two Baguettes per package

Demi Baguette

The Demi Baguette contains a single loaf of ciabatta bread that weighs about 6 oz.

This is just about the perfect amount of bread for my house and is what i would have bought if I had paid more attention to my shopping options!

Ciabatta Rolls

The ciabatta rolls are the same delicious bread but are shaped into rolls/buns instead of loaves.

A 12 ounce package contains four rolls (3 ounce each).

How to Prepare and Serve the Ciabatta

Trader Joe’s suggests that the best way to prepare the ciabatta bread is to place it in a preheated 400F oven, directly on the rack, and bake it for 4-7 minutes.  The longer it bakes the crispier the crust will become.

Ciabatta Heating Instructions

I take a different approach with this bread.

I slice the loaves into either round or diagonal slices.  Both side of the bread get sprayed with olive oil and then placed on a hot grill (if I am making a lot of toast) or a cast iron skillet (if I am only making a few toasts).

The toasts get heated for 2-3 minutes per side, flipped and heated again until both side are crispy and a beautiful golden brown.

I love to serve the ciabatta toasts with diced tomatoes and hummus or use them as oversized croutons for soups, salads and wraps.

These things are beautiful, crunchy and absolutely delicious!

This ciabatta baguette package cost me $1.99 and it was worth every penny.  The next time I buy ciabatta bread at Trader Joe’s I will get the demi baguette as a single six ounce loaf is all I really need at one time.
