Are the Pendleton Blankets at Costco Real?

My wife made a Costco run when I was out of town and bought a wonderful Pendleton blanket for our bed.  I had been hearing about the Pendleton brand for a while and had no idea that they were selling their blankets at Costco!

When I saw how little she paid for the blanket I was amazed and confused as I was familiar with the higher priced items from this brand.  I did a little digging to see what the deal was with these blankets and put together a list of some of the most frequently asked questions people had about the product.

Customer Reviews

Let’s start with my review!

This might be the my favorite blanket of all time.  I am a “hot sleeper” and do not like big heavy blankets weighing me down.  This blanket is extremely light, ridiculously soft and just warm enough that I can sleep directly under the blanket without being too hot or cold.

If you want a big, heavy comforter then this is not the right product for you.  If you want light, cozy, soft and warm then buy one of these blankets right now.

I wanted to see what other customers thought of these blankets so I looked at the reviews on the Costco website. I was surprised to see that there were over 4,500 reviews!

When you combine the 5 and 4 Star reviews you see that 96% of all reviewers really enjoy these blankets.  This might be the highest rated Costco product that I have ever come across.

The few negative reviews for the blankets that were meaningful (excluding issues about shipping, etc) indicate that sometimes the blankets do not hold up well in the washing machine and some of the stitching comes loose.

Where Are the Blankets Made?

The Pendleton blankets being sold at Costco are Made in China.

Pendleton has its headquarters in Portland, Oregon and developed a reputation for ultra high quality wool blankets that have been Made in the USA in their facilities in the Pacific Northwest for over 100 years.

The fact that the Costco blankets are Made in China instead of the USA is one of the main reasons that the Costco blankets are so incredibly affordable.

I tried explaining this to my cat but he didn’t care.  This is his new favorite blanket and all he cares about is that it is soft, warm and cozy.

Are the Blankets Real?

Yes, the Pendleton blankets at Costco are real.

There are some folks who will say that “real Pendleton blankets” are made of wool and are manufactured in the USA.  Since these blankets are 100% polyester and Made in China then they can’t be real Pendleton blankets regardless of what label you put on them.

The thing is though, Pendleton has been including foreign made polyester products on their website for a while now and they are simply part of how the company is evolving.  You can head over to the Pendleton website, type “fleece” into the search bar and you will find the Sherpa Fleece line of products including some lovely jackets that are imported and made of polyester.

The core performance characteristics of these imported polyester blankets are that they are warm, cozy and patterned in Native American themes.

Costco is currently offering the following Native American style blanket patterns:

  • Arrowpoint
  • White Sands
  • Serape Stripes
  • Legend Lake Navy
  • Legend Lake Aqua

Washing Instructions

These blankets are machine washable with the following care instruction.

Care Instructions:

  • Machine wash cold, gentle cycle
  • Only non-chlorine bleach when needed
  • Tumble dry low
  • Do not iron

Some of the very few negative reviews on these blankets concern the fact that the stitching becomes frayed after washing.  I am not sure if this is because the blankets don’t hold up well in the washing machine or if the negative reviewers did not follow the care instructions.

Either way, I would strongly suggest following the suggested care instructions to prolong the life of your blanket.

Price

Costco sells three sizes of these blankets (Twin, Queen, King) and the price varies depending upon the size and what sales happen to be going on.

In general, the blankets cost about:

  • Twin blankets (66 in. x 92 in.) = $30
  • Queen blankets (98 in. x 92 in.) = $35
  • King blankets (66 in. x 92 in.)  = $40

These are massive savings compared to the $200-$300 for the wool blankets that are made in the USA.
