Cooking Instructions for Costco Shepherd’s Pie {Review and Calories}

I went to Costco and picked up a ready to bake Shepherd’s Pie the other day.  The pie was massive and weighed in at a little over four pounds!  I had never tried this product before but figured it was worth a try given the tastiness of Costco’s other ready to bake meal solutions.

This post will cover How to Cook Costco’s Shepherd’s Pie along with a few other items you ought to know.

When you look at the ingredient’s for the Shepherd’s Pie it looks like Costco was hitting all of the right notes.  This pie contains:

  • Meat Filling
    • Cooked ground beef
    • Water
    • Beef Stock
    • Brown sugar
    • Corn oil
    • Onion
    • Butter

    • Corn
    • Mushrooms
    • Burgundy wine

You could argue that this is actually a “Cottage Pie” as it uses ground beef as opposed to a true “Shepherd’s Pie” made with lamb.

Cooking Instructions

The cooking instructions for the pie are:

  1. Preheat your oven to 380F
  2. Remove the pie from the packaging
  3. Place the pie on a cookie sheet

We followed these instructions and found them to be fairly accurate although the cook time for our pie was a full hour.

Taste Test!

Overall we did not think the Shepherd’s Pie was good.

The outer crust browned up nicely and was quite satisfying.  The mashed potatoes were also quite nice.

What we really disliked was the meat filling.

The filling was woefully under seasoned and tasted like an attempt to get rid of leftover cooked hamburger meat.  I doctored the filling up with a little hot sauce and that made it slightly more palatable.

The pie was unsettling in my stomach and the next day my wife and I both felt sluggish and generally “not good”.

I really wish I had bought Costco’s Chicken Alfredo or the Chicken Pot Pie instead of this Shepherd’s pie.

Shepherd Pie Filling

Since the Shepherd’s Pie was so massive we had a LOT of leftovers.

The good news is that our pups thought the pie was delicious as we fed the leftovers to them over the next few days. Millie got to lick the pan.

I checked out what the folks over at Reddit had to say about the pie.  The replies were mixed with some folks loving it and others saying that it was under seasoned and “just ok”.

I suspect you could make a better version of this dish if you poured a container of Costco’s beef chili into a baking dish, topped it with some pre-made mashed potatoes and baled it for an hour.

What to Serve with the Pie

There are several delicious side dishes that can complement Shepherd’s Pie.  Here are some popular options:

  1. Steamed or roasted vegetables: Serve a variety of steamed or roasted vegetables such as carrots, peas, corn, green beans, or Brussels sprouts. You can toss them in a little olive oil, salt, and pepper before cooking to add flavor.
  2. Garden salad: A fresh garden salad with mixed greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, and a tangy vinaigrette can provide a refreshing contrast to the rich flavors of Shepherd’s Pie.
  3. Garlic bread: A warm and crispy garlic bread is a great side dish. You can make it by spreading butter and minced garlic on slices of bread, then toasting or baking them until golden brown.
  4. Creamed spinach: Creamed spinach is a creamy and savory side dish that pairs well with the hearty flavors of the meal. You can make it by sautéing spinach in butter, then adding cream, Parmesan cheese, and seasoning to taste.
  5. Roasted potatoes: Roasted potatoes make a great side dish. Toss diced potatoes in olive oil, salt, pepper, and your favorite herbs such as rosemary or thyme, then roast them in the oven until crispy and golden brown.
  6. Yorkshire pudding: Yorkshire pudding is a traditional British side dish. It’s a light and airy popover-like pastry made with eggs, flour, and milk, which is baked in the oven until puffed and golden.
  7. Cornbread: Cornbread is a classic  side dish that can complement the flavors of Shepherd’s Pie. You can make it from scratch or use a mix, and serve it warm with butter or honey for added sweetness.

These are just a few examples of side dishes that can go well with Shepherd’s Pie. You can mix and match based on your personal preferences and dietary restrictions to create a well-rounded meal.

Storage

The Shepherd’s Pie will last about four days past the “Sell By” date on the package when stored in the refrigerator.

If you need to keep the meal longer than this then go ahead and put it in the freezer as it freezes well.  You can cook the pie directly from frozen without needing to defrost it first.  To heat the pie from frozen add about 45 minutes to the cook time indicated above.

  1. I have had the Shepherd’s pie on two occasions. Both were at a friend’s house. The first one I didn’t like, the seasoning was “a bit off”, and I wouldn’t have purchased one. The second time was much better. However, I don’t know if they changed the seasonings, or what accounted for the difference. Both were purchased at the same store and only about a month apart.
