My latest trip to Aldi’s resulted in finding a package of Simms Original Beef Biltong and I was excited to give it a try!
I have been reading about biltong for over a year but had never found any for sale. Good old Aldi’s came to the rescue again!
Let’s take a closer look at what this product is so you can figure out if it should end up in your shopping cart!
What is Beef Biltong?
Biltong is a preserved meat product that is closely related to beef jerky.
At first glance, Jerky and Biltong look extremely similar. However, once you take your first bite of beef biltong you will understand and appreciate how different is is from jerky.
Jerky is typically cured by the addition of salt and nitrites followed by dehydration. Jerky can often taste extremely salty so sugar is often added to the cure mix to take the edge off the salt flavor. Other flavors that are common in jerky is smoke and black pepper.
In contrast, biltong is cured by the addition of vinegar followed by dehydration. The vinegar bath gives biltong a distinct acidic “twang” flavor that is unlike the salty, smoke flavor common to jerky.
There is no point in debating whether Biltong is better than Jerky as the flavor profiles are completely different. What I can say is that the flavor profile of the Simms Original Beef Biltong is exactly what I expected.

Simms Teriyaki Biltong
I found two flavors of Simms biltong at Aldi, Original and Teriyaki.
The Teriyaki biltong has the same nutritional content (salt, carbs, calories) as the Original. The vinegar flavor is muted in the Teriyaki version and I think I liked the Teriyaki better.
Bought a package of the yeriyaki beef biltong, opened the package and it had mold in the packaging. Very upset!!!
I tried Aldi in Callen today. They have no stock yet.
