Great Bean Stew but Not Chili
Product Name: Amy's Organic Spicy Chili
Brand: Amy's Kitchen
Offer price: 3.69
Amy’s Organic Spicy Chili is a tasty, easy and filling meal. I have enjoyed this product on multiple occasions. While I think that the product is tasty it absolutely does not qualify as “Chili”.
If you want a delicious bean stew then this product will suit you just fine. If you want a bowl of spicy vegetarian chili then this product will disappoint.
High Protein, Low Cholesterol
No chili flavor.
This was my third time trying Amy’s Organic Spicy Chili and I have mixed feelings about the product.
On the one hand, Amy’s Chili meets my primary requirements as it is a tasty, easy and filling meal that is relatively healthy.
On the other hand, this product is, in my opinion, extremely misrepresented which makes me want to make serious qualifications and disclaimers before I recommended it to others.
What I Like About Amy’s Organic Spicy Chili
The main benefits of this “chili” are that it is:
- Tasty and Filling
- Relatively Healthy
Tasty and Filling
Although the product is labeled as “Spicy” do not take it at face value. Instead of “spicy” I prefer to call the product “flavorful”.
There is a little bit of jalapeno pepper in there but it isn’t enough to make me think of the product as “hot”. There is a nice balance of flavors and textures with just enough flavor that you will not get bored while eating.
A can of this “chili” gives you 490 calories worth of food and is an extremely filling meal, especially when paired with some crusty ciabatta bread, crackers or even a hand full of Fritos!
The nutritional values for the product are:
- Calories: 490
- Fat: 15g (19% DV)
- Cholesterol: 0mg
- Sodium: 1,090mg (47% DV)
- Carbohydrates: 63g (23% DV)
- Protein: 26g (43% DV)
This is a high protein, low cholesterol meal that is going to fill you up.
The one downside for me is that the sodium content is much higher than I would prefer.
Other label certifications for this product include:
- No GMOs

What I Do Not Like About Amy’s Organic Spicy Chili
There is no getting away from the fact that this product does not meet any standard definition of “Chili”. If what you want is a big bowl of spicy chili then this product is going to be a big disappointment.
Ingredients in the Spicy Chili
This “chili” contains:
- Red beans
- Bell peppers
- Rice flour
- Safflower/Sunflower oil
- Jalapeno peppers
- Black pepper
While those ingredients do make a tasty “bean stew” they are not chili.
Two of the most prominent ingredients in a real bowl of chili are:
- Tomatoes (sauce or diced)
- Chili Powder
There are absolutely no tomatoes in this product.
If any chili powder is present then it is a miniscule amount that is buried in the generic “Spices” category. Chili powder is a complex ingredient that contains powdered red chilis, cumin and many other flavor packed ingredients that are simply absent in this product.
